Santa Cruz has one of the best surf spots in the country. Pleasure Point has plenty of room on the waves for the many locals. I can recommend Pleasure Pizza, they have great gourmet pizza, not the cheapest pizza but def the best I have had in a long time.
Andrew Molero State Park is located at the northern end of Big Sur. This beach is well worth the mile hike from the car. Sea life is abundant here. I enjoyed body surfing along side seals. The water is cold, bring a wetsuit so you can stay in longer. I was not able to bring my surf board but as I was leaving some surfers arrived ready to enjoy the break in privacy. You can camp here for $10 a night. My wife and I enjoyed the site and highly recommend it.
